Ahhh, October is here and I couldn’t be more excited to get in cozy mode – a.k.a. living in sweaters and sweatpants and drinking all the turmeric tea tonic I can get my hands on. Let’s do this!

First of all, what is a tonic? Good question! It’s a ‘medicinal substance taken to give a feeling of vigor or well-being.’ (source)

And while the benefits of medicinal plants are becoming increasingly recognized in modern society, they’ve been around for a long time. Using plants for healing purposes is a part of Ayurvedic and Unani traditions (source) as well as Traditional Chinese Medicine (source).

I used to think of “tonic” as tonic water. But when I realized that it related more to a healing beverage or substance, I’ve been calling this recipe a “tonic” ever since!

This turmeric-ginger-lemon variety has been on repeat for some time now, so it was due time I share it with you all. It’s easy to make, requiring just 5 minutes, 3 ingredients, and 1 pot. Healthy and easy? Yeah, now we’re talking.

The base for this easy tonic is lemon juice, freshly grated ginger, and freshly grated turmeric. You can elect to add maple syrup, but I didn’t find it necessary! The only other thing I prefer is a little kick in the form of cayenne pepper.

So what makes this tonic healing? Good question.

Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which boasts amazing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. (source) Plus, it’s been used in India for nearly 4,000 years and has gained popularity throughout the world in part due to its vast medicinal uses (read more about it here).

Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that has been known to aid digestion and relieve nausea. (source)

Lemon is naturally detoxifying and alkalizing in the body, aids in healthy bowel movements, and boasts plenty of Vitamin C, which boosts the immune system. (source)

And cayenne stimulates circulation, boosts metabolism, naturally relieves pain, and can have an alkalizing effect in the body. (source)

See? Told ya so.

Healing 3-Ingredient Turmeric Tonic

A 5-minute, 3-ingredient, 1-pot healing tea tonic with ginger, lemon, turmeric, and cayenne. The perfect way to detox the body, recover from a cold, or relax before bed.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp fresh grated turmeric (packed // or 1/2 tsp ground, though fresh is best)
  • 1 Tbsp fresh grated ginger (packed // or 1/2 tsp ground, though fresh is best)
  • 1 whole lemon (juiced // ~3 Tbsp or 45 ml juice as original recipe is written // plus leftover rind)
  • 1-2 tsp maple syrup (optional // can sub stevia or raw honey if not vegan)
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper (optional // or cracked black pepper which many readers have commented helps with the bioavailability of the turmeric!)
  • 3 cups filtered water

Instructions

  • To a small saucepan, add turmeric, ginger, lemon juice and leftover lemon rind, maple syrup (optional), cayenne (optional), and filtered water. I personally didn’t think it needed any sweetener, but sweeten to taste.
  • Bring to a simmer (not a boil) over medium to medium-high heat (~3 minutes). Then turn off heat.
  • Set a small strainer over serving glasses and divide between two mugs. Enjoy. If the tonic is too potent for you, dilute with more hot/warm water.
  • Store (strained) leftovers in the refrigerator up to 2-3 days. Reheat on the stovetop until just warm.

    Hi! This sounds very tasty BUT note an impo thing to know if you are drinking it for the health benefits of turmeric:
    Our bodies need help absorbing turmeric or we just eliminate it through the digestive process. Either oil or black pepper will help us achieve absorption. I’d suggest stirring a teaspoon of coconut oil into it to make it a healthier drink.

      Hi Albie, that’s a neat idea! You could use less water, then let cool, strain, and pour into ice cube trays. When ready to serve, you could add a few ice cubes to mugs and cover with hot water to serve, perhaps? We’d love to hear if you play around with it!

    I don’t have lemons so no rinds :( but I have lemon juice and oranges… Could I use lemon juice and maybe add juice from half an orange and use orange rind to add more citrus flavor?

    This was so soothing delicious! I normally don’t like too much turmeric, but in combination with these other ingredients I really enjoyed it. Yesterday I felt like I was getting sick, and was just a little worn down; this was the perfect drink to have! I bought the ingredients again today so that I could make more. I see this being a staple drink during the cold and flu season!

        Hey Tim, my husband suffered with the same thing until he knocked it out with apple cider vinegar. He haaated it! But he would swig it down (Bragg’s acv) in one shot, grimmace, and the next day be pain free. Every body is different, but it’s worth a shot? The tart black cherry juice, which everybody swears by, never did a d–n thing for him.ACV actually got rid of it. Even his doctor asked him how did he do it.

    Awesome health benefit info – this is delish – I added chaga to mine which I will not do again – it turned the lovely rich orange colour to a less than appealing dirt funky brown – still tastes great tho. I will be adding this to my daily routine as I suffer some joint pain from time to time. Wela’lin!

    More info on the bioavailability of turmeric. In short, raw turmeric doesn’t require *ground* black pepper for absorption due to the natural oils that aid with absorption, but powdered turmeric does require *ground* black pepper.

    Delicious! I added some raw honey at the end after it cooled a bit. This added an anti viral property to my drink (make sure not to let the honey get too hot in order to keep its antiviral properties) sooo good

      Really yummy! I added cayenne but not the maple syrup and only had ground turmeric on hand. Will be picking up fresh for the future. Hoping the immunity benefits kick what I feel coming on!

    Actually I had bought tea bags turmeric, lemon ginger made a cup a few hours ago and could not stay awake. Woke up two hours later on my sofa. I am quite drowsy, even now. I read your information, amazing mainly because June 28th I was in a horrible car accident . My neck area has been so uncomfortable, pain relocating from side to side to middle right now I have very little discomfort

      Use organic fresh ingredients, you will get the most benefits that way. I through out my teas. I came across a video showing they have metals in them. Organic is the way to go. God bless.

    Yes yes yes!! I just made this tonight and I LOVE it! You can actually FEEL it move through your throat and chest. So warm and tingly. I had sweet potato fries for dinner and needed a little healing sensation to counter the fried food. It’s amazing!

    I made the wellness shots and have had the leftover pulp in an airtight container in the fridge for about a week now, it still smells very potent. How long does the pulp last in the fridge before making this tonic?

    Great recipe! I usually do larger and more concentrated batches so I can enjoy the taste and benefits for a couple of days. And I noticed that grated ginger and turmeric can be “extracted” a few times – just add more hot water to the strained pulp and simmer a bit. My first two “extractions” are very concentrated and the third is just good without dilution. Also I use some of the pulp from the first extraction in my curry or recipe calling for ginger and turmeric.
    I tend to add lemon juice at the end to avoid losing vitamin C to heat but I don’t know if it’s any helpful
    Oh and one more thing from me for today, I add some cloves for extra pungency and warmth ☺

      I’ve had a bad cough since 1 week ago with coughing that kept me up. I made this in the middle of the night (without lemon on hand). And it immediately brought relief and I could sleep!

      Another recipe I’ve tried that’s quite similar and has helped my cough is:
      Ginger + turmeric + milk + honey.

    I absolutely love this tea!! I’ve had it the last 4 nights and it seems to curb the desire for snacking or sugar. It has also replaced my nightly wine and I feel amazing. Two nights I drank it w/o sweetener and two nights I added 1/2 t honey. I like it just as well unsweetened, so I think I’ll stick w that. Thanks!!

      We don’t find peeling necessary most of the time! But if the skin has blemishes or doesn’t look clean, it’s best to peel it.

    It’s really cold and windy today, so I made this in the morning and it was really soothing. I am not a fan of fresh turmeric and I reduced the quantity by half, and it was perfect.
    I had a question though, why does recipe calls for simmer and not boil?

      You can boil it but it’s not necessary! I’m always weary to boil ingredients when it’s not necessary in order to preserve more of the nutrients. Hope that helps!

    Wow! This made taking turmeric for health palatable for me. I have struggled to find ways to incorporate it daily. This is the solution! I used grated ginger (I freeze my ginger before grating, makes it so much easier) and turmeric powder (that’s what we had on hand) plus lemon juice and a pinch of black pepper. It has a pleasant zing and slight burn (even without cayenne), and the turmeric flavor does not overwhelm at all. Great stuff!

      Question: I took the tonic around 4pm. Later that night, after going to bed, in the middle of the night I awaken wet from sweat. So much I had to change my pajama top. Why was this? Not only that, I couldn’t stay asleep. Any answers. Thanks.

    I made this for my husband and myself and we loved it spicy yet comforting. Because my husband wanted an extra punch I added a couple of crushed cloves of garlic and i used a pich of cracked black pepper and a little honey.

    This smelled sooooo good! I didn’t use maple syrup since I put honey in my coffee and didn’t want to up my sugar intake, but I bet it would be delish! An easy and yummy way to get the spice benefit up in my diet.

    I drank the tumeric-ginger-lemon juice- maple syrup with water and followed the directions- 30 hours later I have a raised red rashwith small pustilers on my arms chest and back

      I tried this with fresh turmeric and ginger with and without the maple..both delicious but prefer without. I also tried with the dry spices..completely different…cant recommend the dried.

      I have been making this delicious tonic regularly since about a month before the COVID quarantine began as an immune booster. I am so lucky that my local farmers market sells turmeric root and ginger, so I get both of those ingredients fresh. I just love this recipe so much! I sometimes add a little cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom to make it chai like, but it is also amazing as is, with maple syrup and cayenne pepper. I am a 55 year old runner, and I have not had any problems with my knees or hips ever since I started drinking this regularly. Thank you for this wonderful recipe!

    I drink this concoction twice a day before meals.
    I simmer it for about 30 minutes. I always use fresh ginger. Before drinking, I add one tablespoon apple cider vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon matcha per ~8-oz.

    i tried it today cos i have a bloated feeling and i can’t pass gas from tummy. very uncomfortable feeling. I just took 1 glass warm concoction of it added honey and believe me i can’t stop farting and burping sorry hehe.
    But here is my ratio cos i want everyone in my family to take it. We are 6 adults servings.

    Ingredients:
    – half kilo fresh turmeric chopped finely
    -1 medium size ginger chopped finely
    -2 full lemon sliced in pieces
    Boiled for 10 minutes, crushed while draining, Placed it in pitcher put some slices of fresh lemon, put 1 tsp of honey per 1 glass serving

    Made this recipe today. Be careful on the cayenne pepper. It can get spicy quick. No sugar needed especially if you are using this to fight inflammation. Sugar is inflammatory. I used dried turmeric and ginger. Fresh might be better likely.

    Made a similar immunity booster today thanks to your inspiring recipe.
    I added zest of lemon 1/2 orange and tangerine before squeezing and simmering. I didn’t have fresh turmeric or ginger but had these Ground spices on hand. Used whole peppercorn.

    Excellent recipe! I’ve been using these same basic ingredients for a while now, especially lately since my body is trying to fight off some kind of something and I don’t want it to get a foothold, but I’ve just made your recipe, using raw honey, cayenne AND freshly ground black pepper, and I find the ratios to be really perfect!       I have added 1 tsp each of organic ground turmeric, ginger and amalaki powder along with a few grinds of fresh black pepper to a small container with just enough water to make a slurry. Swallowed it, then followed with a glass of water. Quick and dirty way to get it down if you’re in a hurry. I didn’t notice any ill effects even after a month of daily use. However I find the tea much more enjoyable :). Thanks for the recipe.

    I might have been a little overzealous with my pinch of cayenne. This batch was a bit strong for me but as suggested, I added more water and a little stevia. I do love the zesty flavor and I like the simple yet powerful ingredients. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

    Thank you for this. I don’t have the fresh ginger and turmeric, but I have been adding turmeric to hot water (or peppermint tea) for last few nights, plus crushed garlic, oregano, a dash of red wine vinegar, and tonight I added ginger and black pepper, delicious.

    Hi I love this tea! I’ve had a hard time incorporating ginger and turmeric into my diet and this is a great way to do it. I have auto immune so I know this is all good stuff. I also add cinnamon. I’m using fresh ginger and turmeric. I’ve wondered since fresh is better, and you suggest to strain it out, how do we get all the benefits? Just from the little bit that’s in the water? Is it better to eat a little bit of the ginger and turmeric? Also just so I know for the future… Why is fresh better than the Ground version?

      Hi Angela, the beneficial components are extracted into the water, similar to making herbal tea. What’s left behind is primarily fiber. Fresh ginger is more potent. Hope that helps!

    I found this very healthful and easy to make, but almost too healthy and potent to be yummy. I added some maple syrup to make it more tasty but still didn’t love it. But: I think my body is happy to have had it regardless! I misunderstood the instructions and brought it to a simmer and then removed from the heat rather than simmering for 3 minutes, I’m not sure if that contributed to not being the biggest fan. I tried the second portion the next day chilled though and I think I like it best that way.

    I’m unclear if you simmer this for 3 minutes, or it should take roughly 3 minutes to bring it to a simmer and then you remove it from the heat? Thanks!

    Haven’t made this yet, but plan to. Would it be advisable to put a Cinnamon stick in while boiling the mixture? Not sure if it would help or not.

    I am really excited to try this. Since we are in lock down I have ground turmeric and ground ginger and lemon juice. How would I adapt the recipe?

      Hi Kayla, it won’t be quite as potent, but you can use 1/2 tsp each ground ginger and turmeric.

        Hello I’ve been Making ginger, turmeric garlic but using fresh herbs for about a month now. I add honey and lemon for Taste. I love it!

          Good , me too but I added, onion , Orange peel, little black pepper and sprinkle thyme All inside a big tea cup And pour boiling water over it Cover it for few minutes when cool I just stir and drink, very nice too..

      Yes but fresh is the best . But start by putting the powder little by little till it’s okay for you becos if you put too much you wont like it. I put one small teaspoon , it’s going in the tea cup I put just little powder.

      Hmm, we would recommend fresh for best results! But it’s possible it would work. Might lose some potency though!

    I was sick with a bad cold about a week and a half ago and found this recipe. I have been making it nearly ever since, because it was so soothing, warming, and delicious. I can’t find tumeric root, so I have been using dried tumeric as you suggested. I have been experimenting because I love it spicy. I added more ginger, and added both the cayenne AND black pepper. I also add a little more maple syrup. Thanks so much for this delicious healing brew! My cold is almost gone now, but I am still drinking it tonight. Now my poor boyfriend is sick, and he loves it too!

    I’ve been drinking golden milk in the evening to combat inflammation in my shoulder. I stumped across this when I was looking for something a bit more refreshing/lighter. Followed your directions (ground spices) and black pepper. Amazingly delicious and well balanced.

      Hi James, we don’t find the lemon juice to be problematic for us. But you could try drinking through a straw if you would prefer!

    I made this just this morning!, stumbled upon it you could say, and just trying to hydrate and get circulation going, the ginger(if not over-used), is a kick to the pallet, although I put (freshly squeezed lime juice) and bottled lemon juice(cautious of the acidity), but it was definitely a invigorating variety of flavors that gets me going, was unaware how healthy they are combined, Definitely a great morning pick me up, I am incorporating in my daily routine!
